El Camino College has named longtime assistant Jim Millinder as women’s soccer coach.

Millinder, who played for the Warriors in 1976 and 1977 and was Metropolitan Conference player of the year and a community college All-American selection, has been an assistant with the men’s and women’s soccer teams at the school for the past 15 years.

Following his playing career at El Camino, Millinder was drafted by the New York Cosmos and played professional soccer for eight years, including stops with the Los Angeles Aztecs and Los Angeles Lazers.

A graduate of North Torrance High, Millinder was an interim soccer coach at El Camino in 1987 and 1988. He coached the men’s team to the state title in 1987 and the women’s team to the state championship in 1990.

The Loyola Marymount baseball team has signed John Straits, a community college pitcher, to a national letter of intent.

Straits, from Mt. San Jacinto College, is a right-hander who earned All-Foothill Conference honors last season and was named his team’s most valuable player.

Straits was 8-7 with a 2.71 earned-run average, 106 strikeouts and 39 walks in 132 2/3 innings pitched. Straits also had 13 complete games.

“We think he’s a workhorse type of guy,” Robinson said. “He’s a starter and a finisher. We think we can give him the ball and just let him go.”

Robinson said he is hopeful of signing a catcher and third baseman within the next two weeks.
