7 From Southland on Women’s Team
Seven Southern Californians were among the 12 players named to the U.S. Olympic women’s volleyball team Thursday.
Southland players selected include sisters Kim and Elaina Oden of Irvine, Tammy Liley of Westminster, Tara Cross-Battle and Teee Sanders of Long Beach, Liane Sato of Santa Monica, and Paula Weishoff of Torrance.
The Odens’ attempt to become the first sister trio to make an Olympic team fell short when Bev Oden was among the last players cut from the team.
Others named were team MVP Caren Kemner of Quincy, Ill.; Lori Endicott of Springfield, Mo.; Janet Cobbs of St. Paul; Ruth Lawanson of Fresno, and Yoko Zetterlund of San Francisco.
The roster for the men’s team, trying for an unprecedented third Olympic gold medal, is expected to be announced today or Sunday.
