Salmon Leads AL Affiliates to Triple-A All-Star Victory

Tim Salmon scored one run and drove in another Wednesday night to lead the American League affiliates to a 2-1 victory over the National League in the fifth annual triple-A All-Star game.

The start of the game was delayed 1 1/2 hours by rain.

Salmon of Edmonton, the Angels’ Pacific Coast League affiliate, led off the second inning with a walk and went to second on a passed ball. Syracuse’s Ed Sprague singled Salmon to third. He scored on a fielder’s choice.

In the sixth, the American League added a run on a single by Jim Tatum of Denver and Salmon’s RBI double.

The Nationals scored in the eighth on singles by Paul Faries of Las Vegas and Geronimo Berio of Nashville. One out later, Buffalo’s Carlos Garcia singled in the run.

Dennis Moeller pitched one inning for the victory. Earlier Wednesday, Moeller was called up to the parent Kansas City Royals. Columbus reliever Mike Draper pitched a perfect ninth to pick up the save. Tidewater’s Randy Marshall got the loss.

Sam Militello of Columbus, who struck out four in two innings, was the International League’s most valuable player of the game. Tatum was the American Assn.MVP, and Salmon was the Pacific Coast League MVP.
