GARDEN GROVE : New Police Chief to Make $94,032
When new Police Chief Stanley L. Knee starts his new job on Sept. 8, he’ll receive starting pay of $94,032 a year, thanks to special action by the City Council.
The council last week modified an existing ordinance in order to raise the salary range for the police chief’s position by 6%. Council members said the previous salary range was not competitive with many other cities that are looking to hire new chiefs, officials said.
In a report to the City Council, City Manager George Tindall also asked for the pay increase so that Knee would not be forced to take a salary cut. Knee, who will take over for interim Chief David Abrecht, was also given credit for his previous service in the city and can use it as a basis for accruing vacation time. Knee joined the Garden Grove Police Department in 1969 and left in 1988 to become police chief in National City near San Diego.
Meanwhile, City Councilman J. Tilman Williams voted against modifying the ordinance, saying the salary shouldn’t be changed for the new chief.
“I always thought (what) you did for one, you did the same thing for the rest,” Williams said.
