San Diego State won the Hofstra Invitational women’s volleyball tournament in Hempstead, N.Y., scoring a 15-11, 12-15, 15-5, 15-11 victory Saturday in the championship over the host school.

The Aztecs lost only one game in the three-match tournament and had three players make the all-tournament team: outside hitter Gracie Schutt, middle blocker Jennifer Miller and setter Pam Hope.

Schutt was dominant, getting 25 kills in the final. Miller had 14 and Stephanie Riley 10.

It was a similar story in the earlier match, a 15-7, 15-4, 15-4 victory over Hartford. Schutt had 16 kills and Miller had eight.

SDSU (10-2) has now won eight in a row, including a victory over No. 16 Pepperdine.

“I think we got a little tired in the finals, but you can’t win them all pretty,” SDSU Coach Myles Gabel said. “We made a lot of unforced errors in the final game, but the team’s playing real well right now. I’m real proud of them.”

Palomar College, which shared the No. 1 national ranking last year among community college programs, won its 11th consecutive game with a 38-17 nonconference community college victory over Mt. San Jacinto (0-2) at San Marcos High School.

It was the first game of the season for Palomar.

“We didn’t play very well--we put ourselves in a hole (early in the game) because of the penalties,” Palomar Coach Tom Craft said. “This is about what I expected with our inexperience.”
