Whittier : Council Cuts $289,000 From Budget in Lieu of Tax Hike
The City Council unanimously approved cutting $289,000 from the 1992-93 budget this week but decided not to raise utility taxes.
The cuts were made because state officials diverted local cigarette, mobile home and some property taxes from cities to help balance the state budget. Whittier lost about $274,000 in property taxes and $15,000 in mobile home taxes.
City Controller Clara Wong said the cuts approved at Tuesday’s council meeting will not affect city programs because officials had anticipated losing cigarette tax revenues.
The council unanimously rejected a plan to raise utility taxes from 4% to 5%. Wong said the council was able to balance the budget without increasing the tax.
