The New Jersey Nets announced the signing of 7-foot-2 center Dwayne Schintzius to a one-year guaranteed contract. The Nets are the third team in three seasons for the former first-round draft pick.
Willis Reed, the Nets’ senior vice president, said he expects Schintzius to play behind Sam Bowie and Chris Dudley, adding it will help Schintzius’ development to play behind the veterans.
Schintzius, an unrestricted free agent after being waived by Sacramento in July, averaged 3.3 points and 3.6 rebounds in 33 games for the Kings before being sidelined because of a herniated disk in his lower back in February. He also has had a weight problem since joining the NBA in 1990.
Schintzius started his NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs and was traded to the Kings with a second-round draft choice for Antoine Carr in 1991.
