SPORTSCOPE : Dominguez Hills Shuts Down Westmont, 2-0

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team outshot Westmont College, 36-1, and defeated the Warriors, 2-0, Thursday afternoon at Santa Barbara.

Jennifer Womack and Amy Rubin had goals for the Toros (15-2), ranked third in NCAA Division II.

Rubin’s goal, her team-leading 14th, increased her school-record scoring streak to 12 games. Rubin has scored in 23 of her past 27 games.

Westmont nearly scored on its only shot, as forward Nicole Smith hit the crossbar midway through the second half.

The Toros will play host to fifth-ranked Sonoma State University (10-3) Sunday afternoon in a rematch of the 1991 NCAA championship game.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team has not beaten Pepperdine in 10 matches dating to 1986, but the Lions hope to put an end to the streak Saturday when they play host to the Waves in a West Coast Conference match at 7 p.m.

Loyola (13-7, 5-0 in WCC play) is off to its best start in conference play since 1989. The Lions are in second place in the WCC, one-half game behind Santa Clara, and have won eight consecutive conference matches over two seasons.

Pepperdine (7-12, 3-2) is off to one of its worst starts in several seasons.

Loyola has been led by junior outside hitter Deanna Doolittle and sophomore setter Robin Ortgiesen. Doolittle is among team leaders in kills and digs and Ortgiesen leads the WCC and is ranked sixth in the nation in assists.

Ortgiesen, a sophomore from Mira Costa High, established a school record for assists in a match with 89 in the Lions’ victory over San Francisco last week. She is also the school career assist leader with 2,340.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team will play host to NCAA Division I opponent University of San Diego in a nonconference match at 2 p.m. Sunday.

San Diego, ranked No. 23 in Division I, is 10-3 and 3-0 in the West Coast Conference.

The Toreros feature outstanding offensive players in forwards Guillermo Jara and Chugger Adair. Jara has nine goals and 27 points and Adair nine goals and 22 points.

Dominguez Hills (5-8-3) lost to California Collegiate Athletic Assn. opponent Cal State Los Angeles, 5-0, on Wednesday. The Toros are in fifth place in the conference.

The Toros have been led by senior forward Gerardo Yepez, who has six goals and 17 points. With 50 points in his career at Dominguez Hills, Yepez has moved into third place on the school’s all-time scoring list.

The Loyola water polo team will compete in the Cal State Long Beach invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Belmont Plaza and Cal State Long Beach pools.

The Lions, who have won four consecutive matches, will take a 8-10 record into the tournament, which will feature the nation’s top eight teams.

Loyola will open the tournament against top-ranked and top-seeded UC Berkeley at 8 a.m. Saturday. The Lions will play another match Saturday and two more Sunday.

The Lions have been led by senior Jeff Lee, who has 34 goals, and Dan Flynn and Dave Takashima, who have 21 apiece.

Loyola will also play host to Chaminade at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and travel to Pomona-Pitzer for a match at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Loyola men’s soccer team, which has lost nine consecutive matches, will play host to Cal Lutheran in a nonleague match at 3 p.m. Monday.

The Lions (2-12-2, 0-4 in WCC play) lost to UC Irvine on Wednesday and Santa Clara and St. Mary’s last week. Loyola has been led by junior forward Dannel Christian, who has five goals and 11 points.

Loyola basketball Coach John Olive will discuss motivational strategies during the Westchester/LAX Chamber of Commerce’s monthly breakfast meeting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Marriott Hotel, 5855 West Century Blvd., Westchester.

The Amateur Athletic Foundation and the California Interscholastic Federation are offering a free soccer coaching clinic Saturday for high school and club coaches.

The clinic is at South Torrance High, 4801 Pacific Coast Highway, Torrance.

The program meets the training requirements for a United States Soccer Federation “D” coach’s license--a license that enables coaches to participate in the California State Olympic Development program as a select team coach.

Jerry Chandler of Gardena is among seven athletes who have been selected for the California Special Olympics’ Spirit of Friendship Award.

The award is given to athletes who personify the Special Olympics concept of “training for life.”

Chandler, 16, will receive his award during the California Special Olympics’ annual fund-raising dinner Nov. 7 at the Beverly Hilton.
