It might be a good idea to carry an umbrella today.

Meteorologists are predicting that the rain showers that moved into Ventura County late Friday will stick around for most of the day before tapering off late tonight.

Scattered showers from a low-pressure system moving north from Baja fell over parts of the county Friday beginning in the late afternoon, said Elizabeth Page, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

The rain brought relief to county residents who had sweltered earlier in the day from temperatures rising to the 90s in some areas. El Rio had the county’s high, at 91 degrees, while other areas reached the mid-80s.

Temperatures will drop to the mid-70s to upper 80s today as the storm system continues to cool things down, Page said. Sunday should be clear and cooler as the weather mass moves north, she said.

Friday’s scant precipitation came on the heels of an unexpected storm Wednesday that dropped as much as a third of an inch of rain in Ventura and Port Hueneme.

The early start of wet weather has put parts of the county ahead of normal rain totals for the year, officials said.

Rainfall totals for Friday were not available.
