PORT HUENEME : City to Condemn Lots for RV Park

Share

The city of Port Hueneme will move to condemn five beachfront lots needed to build a city-owned recreational vehicle resort, the City Council decided Friday.

An attorney representing three of the property owners asked the council to delay action until more public comment on the issue could be heard. But council members voted 4-0 to approve the move, saying they did not want to delay the progress of the RV park project.

Councilman Ken Hess was absent.

The five lots comprise a total of 10,000 square feet. The land abuts a 10-acre city-owned lot that is slated for a 143-space RV park that the city wants to build on the southeast end of Hueneme Beach. City officials contend the property has no value to owners because it is in an area designated by the state for public recreational uses only.

Owners of the parcels disagree, making it necessary for the city to take control of the property through legal condemnation, said Tom Figg, the city’s director of community development.

Condemnation has also been opposed by the Sierra Club and a group of homeowners who live near the proposed RV park. They have joined forces to contend the parcels should not be condemned without an extensive environmental review.
