Murray Catches a Jab Right on the Keyboard for Column on Fight
Jim Murray’s 50-million-word tuneup is overdue. First he bashes Canada during the World Series with stale jokes about moose in traffic and now he shows how little he knows about boxing.
In Saturday’s piece about the Holyfield-Bowe fight, Murray somehow scored it 115-115 while “giving Bowe the 11th by 10-8.” No matter that two judges scored Bowe a winner by 117-110 and the third had it 115-112.
Compounding matters is Murray’s claim that “they both left the best punch (a left jab) in the dressing room.”
On the same page, the CompuBox “punch line” shows Bowe attempted 248 jabs, landing 132 for 53%. Holyfield’s jabs were 161, 63 landing for 39%.
Which fight did Murray cover?
