Hawthorne and Redondo Beach police have arrested two Los Angeles teen-agers in connection with a shooting and robbery spree in three South Bay neighborhoods last week.

Shantic Price, 19, and an unidentified 17-year-old were arrested outside a Willowbrook-area house by detectives who had the pair under surveillance, Redondo Beach police Detective Mark Sturgeon said.

Police said the teen-agers are suspects in five robberies and one shooting that took place Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Hawthorne, Lawndale and Redondo Beach.

The juvenile has been released to his father’s custody, Sturgeon said. Price, who was booked on suspicion of armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, was being held in the Redondo Beach jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Sturgeon said police arrested Price and the juvenile after a boyfriend of one of the victims had chased the robbers through Redondo Beach and written down their car license number.

The first incident took place about 9:10 p.m. Tuesday when a man who had just returned to his home in the 4300 block of 142nd Street was approached by two armed robbers demanding money, Hawthorne police Lt. Arvid Krueger said. The victim gave the robbers his wallet and called police after the pair ran from the area.

About 20 minutes later, a man leaving his house in the 4500 block of 154th Street was confronted by a pair of armed men who matched the description of the robbers in the earlier incident, Krueger said. He also handed over his money, and told police the robbers fled in a gray Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Then, at 10 p.m., two men in a similar car followed a woman as she drove to her home in the 16700 block of Freeman Avenue. Krueger said she was robbed as she prepared to get out of her car.

Ten minutes later, two robbers confronted a woman as she got out of her car in the rear parking lot of an apartment building in the 4100 block of 137th Street, Krueger said. The woman’s screams brought her husband, 32-year-old Oliver Williams Jr., running from the building to help her.

The robbers shot Williams once in the stomach and drove from the scene, Krueger said. Williams was hospitalized in stable condition at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

The following evening, two armed robbers confronted Redondo Beach resident Lance Hunziker about 11 p.m. as he stood in the 2500 block of Nelson Avenue talking to his girlfriend, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of her car, Sturgeon said.

One robber grabbed the girl’s purse from her car as another frisked Hunziker, looking for money, Sturgeon said. Using a small remote control on his key chain, Hunziker managed to trigger the alarm on his own car, which was parked across the street.

The alarm’s wail startled the robbers, who ran away, Sturgeon said. Hunziker, who saw them flee in a gray Oldsmobile Cutlass, jumped into his own car and began chasing the pair.

During the chase, Hunziker managed to write down the car’s license number, Sturgeon said. He broke off the chase when one of the robbers began shooting at him as the cars raced east on Ruhland Avenue.

Sturgeon said detectives, who are still investigating the various incidents, plan to take their cases to the district attorney’s office.
