Sobriety Checkpoint Nets 17 Suspects
An overnight drunk-driving checkpoint here resulted in 17 arrests, police reported Saturday.
Checks were conducted at the intersection of Coast Highway and Wave Street between 10 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday, Sgt. Bob Rahaeuser said.
The checkpoint was jointly coordinated by Laguna Beach officers and sheriff’s deputies, who provide police service for Dana Point, Rahaeuser said. Plans for the checkpoint had been announced in advance, as required by law, he said.
Rahaeuser said 1,966 vehicles passed that intersection during the five-hour check period, and 917 were stopped. Officers gave field sobriety tests to 35 of the stopped motorists, and arrested 17.
