Countywide : Campground to Be Closed for 4 Months

A Ventura County campground operated by the National Park Service will close for four months as part of a nationwide series of belt-tightening measures aimed at keeping the agency within its budget.

The Happy Hollow Campground at the Circle X Ranch, just west of Point Mugu near the Los Angeles County line, will be closed from Jan. 1 to the end of April, said Catherine Saunders, spokeswoman for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

Saunders said the ranch will remain open for daytime hiking, but no overnight camping will be permitted.

The agency will also save funds locally by cutting back on maintenance, ranger-led walks, trail rehabilitation and road repairs, said David E. Gackenbach, superintendent of the recreation area.

Another national park in the area, Channel Islands, may reduce the hours of operation at its visitors center in Ventura to cope with the national funding shortage, said Mack Shaver, superintendent for Channel Islands National Park.

Park service officials said the cuts are needed because the agency received 5% less than it requested for day-to-day operation of national parks.
