OUTLOOK What do you do when you have 10 players very close in ability? According to Lock, you play them all. At least, that’s his plan for the Tartans this season in the Academy League. “We have two units of five and substitute in at regular intervals,” Lock said. “We change about every three minutes. We keep fresh bodies in there. I’ve always wanted to do this. This year we have the team to do it.” Obviously, with an approach like that, the Tartans have a balanced scoring attack. When pressed to name a team leader, though, Lock came up with Trettle, a freshman point guard. “She’s the leader,” Trettle said. “She shoots the ball from all over. But our other point guard, Lisa Bevill, can play, too.” And under the Tartans’ system, she does. There is a big reason why Lock chose such an unusual system: defense. “We are trying to run the other team ragged,” Lock said. “We play kind of like Loyola Marymount. We just keep pressing and running.” Lock figures California Lutheran is the team to beat in the Academy League. “We’re happy to be competitive,” he said.
