La Verne : Park Tree Removal on Hold
The City Council postponed renovation of the softball and soccer fields at Las Flores Park after residents opposed a plan to remove or relocate a dozen trees.
Fred and Linda Sparling, who live near the park, said removing the cedar, ash and pine trees would destroy their view and make the park less enjoyable.
Parks and Community Services Director Bill Aguirre said Monday that only one or two of the trees could be saved and relocated. Aguirre said the trees had to be removed so the soccer field can be realigned. The entire project would cost $18,354.
New trees would replace those taken out.
Bonita High School junior varsity softball team would have used the field at Las Flores when its season begins Feb. 15. Instead, the team will play at La Verne Recreation Park on Palomares Avenue until the council decides what to do about the park renovation.
