PREP TRACK ROUNDUP : Injuries Can’t Stop Woodbridge Boys

Woodbridge captured the boys’ team title Friday night at the Sea View League Track and Field Finals at Irvine High School, but it was a bittersweet victory.

Woodbridge lost sprinters Gary Young and Meisha Wilson-Duval to injuries before the meet.

“This victory is a great tribute to our whole team,” Woodbridge Coach George Varvas said. “But we can’t help but feel something is missing without Meisha and Gary to go to CIF.”

Young, a junior, sustained a nerve injury to his right foot before the league prelims. Young, who is one of the best sprinters in the Southern Section, ran in the prelims, but was scratched from the meet a few hours before Friday’s meet.

“There’s no damage right now, but he doesn’t have control,” Varvas said. “It’s possible he could further the injury so it was decided to forgo this year.”

Sophomore Wilson-Duval suffered a partial pulled hamstring before the prelims meet. She was not expected to compete Friday.

Two meet records were set in the girls’ weight events. University’s Andrea Bill broke her own discus record of 140 feet 3 inches, set last season, and became a three-time league champion. The senior threw 142-6 on Friday, defeating Newport Harbor’s Gina Heads, who went 135-3.

Heads came back to break a 12-year-old meet record in the shot put, set by Irvine’s Lynn Kelly (41-7 1/2), with a 42-10 effort.

“My throwing was consistent, which is my main goal, and gaining the league championship is icing on the cake,” said Heads, who helped the Sailors to the girls’ team title.

Both Heads, whose career best is 43-2, and Bill lead the county in their events.

Newport Harbor’s Beau Ralphs went 57-1 1/4 in the shotput, the third-best mark in the Southern Section this season. Four athletes went farther than 50 feet Friday.

In the boys’ 110-meter hurdles, Woodbridge’s Steve Forte won in 14.97.

Corona del Mar freshman Kelly Campbell won the girls’ 1,600 (5:13.35) and 3,200 (11:01.4) and University’s Christina Pham went a county-leading 36-3 1/2 in the triple jump. Santa Margarita’s Heather Novak (35-6) followed Pham.
