Metalwork Pact Approved in One E. German State
Local union leadership in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt voted Monday to accept a compromise draft settlement worked out late last week to end the 2-week-old strike in the region’s metalworking industry, but intense deliberations elsewhere effectively delayed any definitive end to the dispute.
The draft accord approved last Friday in the eastern state of Saxony was initially seen by observers as a formula that would quickly end the strike, the first in the former Communist region in more than 60 years.
While union leaders in Thuringia state are also expected to endorse the Saxony accord, those in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-West Pomerania are refusing to go along with recommendations from the western German-dominated national union leadership to end the dispute.
