CAL STATE FULLERTON NOTES : DeWalt Selected Best in Big West

Senior shortstop Denise DeWalt, who helped Cal State Fullerton win a share of the Big West Conference softball championship, was named Big West Conference softball player of the year Monday.

Titan pitcher Tiffany Boyd, a senior from Woodbridge High, also earned first-team, all-conference honors.

Fullerton’s Rose Garces, Cheryl Longeway, Heidi Robertson, and Jstone Vines earned second-team honors. Long Beach State’s Sandra Ross, formerly of Marina High, also earned second-team honors.

Four Cal State Fullerton baseball players were named first-team All-Big West Conference Monday.

Fullerton second baseman Jeremy Carr, catcher Adam Millan, outfielder Dante Powell and pitcher Dan Ricabal earned first-team honors. Outfielder Tony Banks and pitcher Mike Parisi were named to the second team.

The Titans finished second in the conference behind Cal State Long Beach.

San Jose State third baseman Gerad Cawhorn, formerly of Marina High and Golden West College, was named Big West Conference baseball player of the year.

Cawhorn leads the conference in hitting with a .405 batting average and .490 on-base percentage. He is also third in the conference in runs batted in (57) and slugging percentage (.650).

Pacific first baseman Doug Bame of Mission Viejo also earned first-team all-conference honors.

The Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball team signed three more players, the school announced Monday.

La Cheri Grant, a 5-foot-11 forward from San Jose City College, Beth Taylor, a 6-2 center from College of the Sequoias, and Michele Leitner, a 6-2 1/2 forward from Chico Pleasant Valley High, all signed letters of intent.

Grant averaged 16.6 points and 12.5 rebounds last season.
