Buyukuncu, who swam for his native country, Turkey, in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, dominated the Southern Section Division I championships Friday. He set a national high school record in the 100-yard backstroke, winning in 47.84 seconds to break the mark of Derek Weatherford of Ft. Myers, Fla., by more than a second. Buyukuncu had set a Southern Section record (49.51) in the preliminaries Thursday, before surpassing that and the national record Friday. Said Woodbridge Coach Dan Gaines: “I knew he could do it, but I didn’t know he would do it by this much.” Buyukuncu also won the 200 individual medley in 1:49.78, narrowly missing the Southern Section record of 1:49.13 set by Mission Viejo’s Marcin Malinski last year.
