Like any good outside hitter, Walker gets his share of kills--he led Huntington Beach with 24 in a five-game victory over Capistrano Valley for the Southern Section Division I title Saturday--but another facet of Walker’s game was key to the Oilers’ victory. “Shadd’s passing is what really helps,” Huntington Beach Coach Rocky Ciarelli said. “He’s a very good passer. He moves his feet well and gets himself to the ball and passes it well.” Walker’s passing helped setter Chris Jones (82 assists) give plenty of kill opportunities to the Oilers’ other top hitters: Mike Grave (21 kills), Nick Ziegler (19) and Chris Swann (18). “I didn’t really have a kid who had a bad game and that’s what we needed to win,” Ciarelli said.

Other top performers: * Marcus Jones picked up a victory and a save as Esperanza advanced to the Division I baseball semifinals. Jones saved a 7-2 victory over Edison and allowed six hits and one run in five innings in an 8-1 victory over Hesperia. He also had three hits and two runs batted in against Edison. * Paul Nihipali had 31 kills in Esperanza’s three-game sweep of Simi Valley Royal for the Division II volleyball title. He had 18 kills in the Aztecs’ semifinal victory over Upland. * The Foothill 1,600 relay team--Don Oliver, Mike Lynch, Tad Heath and Ethan Taub--set a county record of 3 minutes 15.09 seconds in winning the race at the Masters Meet. * Western’s Tiger Woods shot four-under-par 68 at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs to win his second Southern Section individual golf championship in three years.
