Gretzky’s Hand Is on Every Goal, Including One for the Canadiens

Wayne Gretzky is so hot these days, nobody can keep him out of their net.

Not the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nor the Montreal Canadiens.

Nor even the Los Angeles Kings .

Even The Great One has some not-so-great moments, such as Tuesday night in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals.

Trying to clear a shot off the stick of Montreal’s Ed Ronan, Gretzky inadvertently shot the puck into his own net, past Kelly Hrudey, his shocked goalie, for the Canadiens’ only goal in a 4-1 King victory.

“I have to admit I was pretty embarrassed,” Gretzky said sheepishly. “I didn’t just tip it. I fired it.”

Hrudey’s reaction?

“If he had a night like this,” said the Kings’ goalie of Gretzky, who also had a goal and three assists for his own team, “he can score as many as he wants (for the other side), because he’s going to get them all back.”
