SANTA ANA : Math Teacher Gets Top Faculty Award

Share

Mary Anne Anthony, a longtime mathematics instructor for the Rancho Santiago College District, has been honored with the district’s 1993 Distinguished Faculty Award.

A panel of faculty, students and administrators chose her from among about 290 faculty members in recognition of her teaching and leadership skills, as well as her contributions to several district committees.

“I was overwhelmed” at receiving the award, said Anthony, 40. “I’m very honored.”

Her husband, John Smith, also a mathematics teacher at Rancho, was among the five other finalists she beat out for the award. Still, Anthony added, there were no hard feelings: “He gave me a dozen long-stemmed roses.”

She said her work has included coordinating a federal program designed to improve the way instructors teach and improve students.

Anthony, who lives in Irvine, has been teaching at Rancho since 1976, said Dale Ruhe, a spokesman for the district.
