COSTA MESA : Action on Trash Fee Hike Is Postponed

Share

A decision on a request from the city’s recycling company to raise trash fees was postponed this week by the Costa Mesa Sanitary District Board.

C.R. Transfer had asked the district to raise the recycling portion of residents’ trash bills by about $1 a year. The company is requesting the increase, which would raise $25,000, to help defray hauling costs.

“Our board is very interested in keeping the rates as low as possible,” said Florine Reichle, clerk of the board. She added that the vote was postponed at the request of a board member who could not attend Wednesday’s meeting. The board will take up the matter Thursday at its regular meeting.

Currently, residents pay $11.87 a month in trash fees. Out of that, $2.03 is for recycling fees. The most recent rate increase, which cost residents an additional 20 cents per month, occurred last year. If approved next week, the rate hike would go into effect immediately.

The Sanitary District Board meets at 7:30 p.m. in the first-floor conference room of City Hall, 77 Fair Drive. For more information on the meeting, call (714) 754-5043.
