3 Killed as Cuban Guards Intercept U.S. Speedboat
Three people were killed and at least one wounded when Cuban frontier guards fired on a U.S.-registered speedboat near Havana, local news reports said Friday.
Cuban authorities said the boat, Midnight Express, violated Cuban territorial waters as it was trying to pick up a group of Cubans and take them to the United States, the local news agency AIN reported.
The incident took place near the small fishing village of Cojimar on Thursday night, AIN said Friday. It said Cuba had sent a note to the U.S government advising it of the incident.
The note blamed U.S. policy for encouraging the illegal departure of Cubans for the United States.
The report named two of the dead as Alfredo Evelios Caballin Marin and Loamis Gonzalez Mansini. The report said that the body of the third person killed has still not been identified.
Among the wounded was a U.S. citizen identified as Ricky Robert Hoddinott of Key West, Fla.
