BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Three Stay Behind to Rehabilitate

Share

The Dodgers arrived in Montreal without three players who are on the 15-day disabled list--Todd Worrell, Darryl Strawberry and Jody Reed.

Worrell, sidelined because of elbow soreness, is on a rehabilitation assignment with the Albuquerque Dukes. He has pitched two innings in two games, giving up one hit and striking out two. Before Worrell left for his assignment, he reviewed tapes of him pitching to try to correct his mechanics. He contrasted his success last season with the St. Louis Cardinals, when he had a 2.11 earned-run average, with the way he pitched in five games the past month, when he had an 0-1 record and a 14.40 ERA.

Among the corrections, Worrell said he wasn’t using his legs for power and wasn’t coming over the top enough. Worrell was eligible to be activated June 25 and will return when he feels ready.

Reed, sidelined because of a partially torn ligament in his left elbow, will join the team Monday in Philadelphia. “There isn’t anything he could do here that he couldn’t do at home,” Dodger Trainer Charlie Strasser said. Reed, who was eligible to be activated Thursday, needs to strengthen his arm before he attempts to swing a bat. He might be sidelined through the All-Star break.

Strawberry, sidelined to strengthen his surgically-repaired back, requested to do his therapy at Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood.
