Wyoming Package Promises Vroom With a View : Winter program in Grand Tetons includes use of snowmobile and personal instruction.

Snowmobiling may not seem like the ideal winter vacation activity for senior travelers. Au contraire . A series of snowmobile programs for seniors 55 and over in the Yellowstone/Jackson Hole, Wyo., area has proven to be so popular that two of the six tour dates for this winter are already sold out.

Sno-World Snow Tours is offering a series of five-day programs to groups limited to 28 persons. Participants stay at a rustic resort, Togwotee Mountain Lodge, about 50 miles northeast of Jackson in the Wind River mountain range. The lodge has complete winter resort facilities, including game rooms, hot tubs and saunas, plus a king-size fireplace and saloon.

The daily schedule gives participants their choice of activities. Upon arrival, each person is assigned a snowmobile for the duration of his or her stay. Though the vehicles should have ample power, according to the tour operator, upgrades to more powerful vehicles are available at nominal extra cost. “We can teach you to operate a snowmobile in 15 minutes,” according to a statement issued by Sno-World. “If you are physically fit, you should have no concern, even if you’ve never seen a snowmobile. A guide is always nearby if assistance is needed.”

Other tour features include an overnight two-day trip to Yellowstone National Park, and a day to visit the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole by sleigh. Each year, more than 6,000 elk winter at the site.

At this time, seniors-only tours are available for dates in January, February and March, 1994. Prices range $869-$939 per person, depending on tour date, and include all winter clothing (helmet, boots, mittens), plus lodging, meals and snowmobile.

Transportation to Jackson Hole is not included in the tour prices, although travelers will be picked up at the Jackson Hole airport and taken to Togwotee Mountain Lodge.
