SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Eleven-year-old Karie Minzey, who survived a crash that killed both her parents and led to the arrest of a Laguna Beach physician, will leave Western Medical Center this morning for a rehabilitation center in Georgia.

Karie, who suffered head injuries, and her 15-year-old sister, Shelbie, will live in Kennesaw, Ga., with an aunt and uncle, according to a statement released Monday through the Bank of Orange County, where a trust fund has been established for the girls.

Karie, an avid softball player, was traveling home to Mission Viejo with her parents from a softball game on July 11 when their car was hit head-on on Santiago Canyon Road. Mark and Noreen Minzey were killed instantly. Two other girls in the car, both friends of Karie’s, were treated at a hospital and released.

Ronald Joseph Allen, 31, a physician who specializes in AIDS treatment, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and causing serious injury. After the accident, Allen tested positive for several types of drugs and alcohol, according to court documents.

Allen, who has a history of drunk driving arrests, remains in jail without bail. The state Medical Board has moved to revoke his license.

The statement from family members said Karie has shown great recent improvement, although her progress is still being closely monitored by her doctors. The family and hospital officials have refused to reveal the nature of her injuries.

Family members, including both sets of grandparents, have “carried on a 24-hour vigil by her bedside,” according to the statement.

“Her doctors have allowed her to see a few visitors, and she has seen some of her Stoneybrooke teachers, principal and vice principal; some of her close friends and teammates, and her treasured team coach Russ Little,” the family said. “Karie was excited by a surprise visit from her favorite Angel ballplayer, Chuck Finley.”

Karie will travel by air today to a rehabilitation hospital connected with Emory University in Georgia, the family said.

“She will be close to her sister and to her Aunt Jeanine and Uncle Tom, whom the Orange County Superior Court has appointed as their personal guardians,” the family said. Jeanine Posey is the sister of the girls’ late father.

Shelbie left for Georgia on Friday, and bid a “tearful goodby to some of her close friends at the Orange County Airport,” the family said. Shelbie, who had been visiting her aunt and uncle in Georgia at the time of the crash, starts school in Kennesaw on Monday.

The plight of the two girls has sparked an enormous outpouring of assistance from the community, including numerous fund-raisers.

At one recent carwash alone, teammates of Karie in the Mission De Oro Bobby Sox League raised more than $9,000. Mark and Noreen Minzey were also active volunteers in the league, Noreen as a manager and Mark as an assistant coach.

Donations may still be sent to the trust fund established at the Bank of Orange County, 27230 La Paz Road, Mission Viejo, Calif. 92692.
