NORTH HILLS : Sikhs Will Appeal Denial of Center
As part of an ongoing effort to gain approval for a religious sanctuary, representatives of a Sikh group will argue their case before the city Board of Zoning Appeals today.
Last month, the group appealed an associate zoning administrator’s decision, which concluded that the conversion of a vacant residence at 14920 Plummer St. in North Hills into a 33,000-square-foot center for religious worship, day care and senior activities would create too much activity and have a detrimental impact on the character of the neighborhood.
The Sikh group issued charges of discrimination as a result of the decision, and vowed to appeal.
Some residents of North Hills, who cited concerns about increased traffic, parking problems and noise at the center, gathered more than 80 signatures in opposition to the project. Pauline Amond, a zoning consultant representing the Sikhs, said that such opposition to proposals for religious facilities is common.
If built, the Sikh center would be the second of its kind in the Valley.
The appeals board is expected to hear the case at 11:15 a.m.
