A big-rig driver was shot to death during an attempted hijacking of his truckload of electronic gear near an on-ramp to the San Diego Freeway in Carson on Monday afternoon, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Sgt. Robert Stoneman said two or three men approached the truck as it pulled up to a stop sign at 223rd Street and Wilmington Avenue. One man pulled a gun and after a brief verbal exchange with the driver, the gunman opened fire, fatally wounding the driver, Stoneman said. He said the suspects fled in a waiting car.

The driver, whose identification was withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. A relief driver in a sleeping compartment behind the cab was not injured.
