Curt Schilling, who will start today for the Phillies, lost his lucky cap on the field at Veterans Stadium on Wednesday night during the pennant celebration. The cap, which he has worn all year, has the words written in pen underneath the bill, “No talk, just get it done,”

Friday, before the team left for Toronto, he was listening to a local sports talk show and a fan called up saying he had jumped onto the field during the celebration and felt guilty about taking it.

“I called the radio station and we arranged a swap,” Schilling said. “There’s no question it’s the hat. One whiff and you know it. I don’t think there’s a cleanser that could get the smell out.”

Schilling, pitching in the World Series for the first time, says his parents always told him that he responds well in pressure situations. He recalls one time when he didn’t.

“The first time my father ever saw me pitch in the minors I gave up eight runs in 1 1/3 innings,” Schilling said. “It was my second season, and I think I had five wild pitches. He ragged on me unmercifully for four days, and I went out and won my next start, so I was one for two. Then my father said, ‘You don’t want to be known as a .500 pitcher.’ ”

Juan Guzman, starting pitcher today for the Blue Jays, said he thinks his team is very much like the Phillies, except for one thing: “The only difference is they look so wild, the long hair, the big guys. They look like truck drivers.”

To that, Schilling replied: “Yeah, we do.”

Blue Jay Manager Cito Gaston said Pat Hentgen will start Game 3 in Philadelphia. If he goes with a four-man rotation, Gaston is leaning toward Todd Stottlemyre instead of Al Leiter, Toronto’s left-handed starter. “Their (Phillies) left-handed hitters don’t care who is up there,” Gaston said.

Manager Jim Fregosi said Ricky Jordan will start today as the Phillies’ designated hitter and Mariano Duncan--who has been suffering from a rib injury--will start at second base.

John Kruk and several other Phillies wore caps to the workout sent to them from the “America’s Most Wanted” television show. Kruk, who played the majority of Game 6 with a rip in his pants--saying Tommy Greene was pitching too well for him to change--also wore the same workout gear to the SkyDome Friday as he had to the workouts in Atlanta. “We won two of three games there when I wore these,” he said.
