Vedder Leads Laguna Hills Past Artists

Laguna Hills quarterback Justin Vedder threw for 225 yards and four touchdowns on just seven completions to lead the visiting Hawks to a 46-20 victory over Laguna Beach in a Pacific Coast League game Friday night.

Laguna Hills (6-3, 2-2) accumulated 445 total yards with a well-balanced offensive attack.

Laguna Hills scored on its first five possessions, opening the scoring with 4:35 left in the first quarter on a 12-yard pass from Vedder to Erich Derbsch.

The Hawks balanced their next four scores, all in the second quarter, equally on the ground and through the air. Fred Kim, who rushed for 180 yards in 29 carries, scored on runs of five yards and a yard. Vedder, who was seven for 11 with no interceptions, threw two more touchdown passes, of 80 yards to Marcus Elliott and 18 to Rick Stilson, and Laguna Hills led, 32-0, with 1:28 left in the half.

“Their skill players are just a little faster than ours,” Laguna Beach Coach Mike Roche. “We just did too much catching up.”

Laguna Beach finally scored with seven seconds left in the half when Pat Wood hit Scott Kimball with a 31-yard pass to make it 32-6.

Kimball caught 12 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns. Wood completed 16 of 32 passes for 220 yards and rushed for 102 yards on 23 carries.
