World IN BRIEF : FRANCE : Muslim Cleric Held in Sweep Is Expelled

Authorities expelled a Muslim cleric and swore not to let France become a base for Islamic extremists in Algeria, who have been blamed for killing two Frenchmen and kidnaping three others. Turkish cleric Hussein Konus was one of 88 people detained Tuesday in a sweep of Muslim fundamentalists’ homes. All but 13 were released. A court ruled that at least three could be held for a further 48 hours on suspicion of complicity in terrorism.
