THE RECYCLING BIN : Isn’t It About Time for Another ‘Musketeers’ Film?

Hollywood has always had a penchant for remakes and these days are no exception.

So we decided to check in with the studios to see what projects--based on or inspired by movies of the past--are currently in production or development.

DISNEY

Angels in the Outfield. A baseball comedy/fantasy based on the 1951 film. The new version, to be produced by Joe Roth, Roger Birnbaum and Irby Smith and directed by William Dear, stars Danny Glover, Brenda Fricker and Tony Danza.

My Father, the Hero. A remake of a French film directed by Francis Veber. Now starring Gerard Depardieu and directed by Steve Miner.

The Jungle Book. A live-action version of Rudyard Kipling’s novel, which Disney first released as an animated feature in 1967.

An untitled sequel to Disney’s 1991 “Father of the Bride” loosely based on Father’s Little Dividend--a sequel to the 1950 version of “Father of the Bride.”

Meet John Doe. Inspired by the Frank Capra classic featuring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. No stars or director yet attached.

TRISTAR

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. A new take on the Frankenstein myth based on the Mary Shelley novel, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh. Also starring Robert De Niro, Helena Bonham Carter, Aidan Quinn and John Cleese. Boris Karloff first played the monster on the big screen in 1931.

Mary Reilly. Produced by Ned Tanen and Nancy Graham Tanen, directed by Stephen Frears, and written by Christopher Hampton, this new look at the classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tale--first appearing on the screen in a 1921 silent film--is told from the point of view of Jekyll’s young maid (Julia Roberts).

Godzilla. A modern version of the 1955 Japanese horror film, produced by Cary Woods and Rob Fried. No director as yet.

Zorro. A Steven Spielberg production harking back to “Zorro Rides Again” (1937), “Zorro’s Black Whip” (1944) and “Zorro, The Gay Blade” (1981). No script yet.

20TH CENTURY FOX

Miracle on 34th Street. John Hughes is writing and directing a remake of the 1947 movie about a department store Santa who claims he’s the real thing. A Christmas 1994 release.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. “My Cousin Vinny’s” Jonathan Lynn takes another shot at the 1947 film about a widow who refuses to be driven from her house by a sea captain’s ghost. Paul Schiff is producing. In development. Sean Connery is being discussed for the lead.

Niagara. A remake of director Henry Hathaway’s 1953 melodramatic murder tale of a honeymoon couple staying at Niagara Falls in which Marilyn Monroe starred as a wife planning to kill her husband (Joseph Cotten). Paul Schiff is producing, based on a script by Amy Jones (“Indecent Proposal”).

FOX/DISNEY (Joint Venture)

Shock Corridor. A remake of Samuel Fuller’s ‘60s noir thriller about a journalist who goes undercover in a mental institution to investigate a series of murders but soon goes crazy himself. Paul Schiff and Lee Rich are producing. Seth Flicker is writing the script. No director yet.

WARNER BROS.

Wyatt Earp. Directed by Lawrence Kasdan and starring Kevin Costner, this movie centers on the famed lawman of the Old West previously canonized in 1957’s “Gunfight at the OK Corral” and many other films.

Love Affair. Glenn Caron directs Warren Beatty and Annette Bening in a remake of 1957’s “An Affair to Remember,” which starred Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant--itself a remake of the 1939 film “Love Affair” starring Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer.

Diabolique. Producer Marvin Worth is overseeing a new version of the 1955 classic French thriller that starred Simone Signoret.

COLUMBIA

No remakes scheduled.

UNIVERSAL

The Mummy. Directed by Joe Dante, produced by Mike Finnell, with a new rewrite by John Sayles, this project is based on the 1932 Boris Karloff movie.

The Little Rascals. Based on the “Our Gang” comedies shot by Hal Roach beginning in 1922 before they hit the small screen in the 1950s. Director: Penelope Spheeris.

MGM

Theatre of Blood. Chris Columbus will write, produce and direct the horror cult classic originally starring Vincent Price and released by United Artists in 1973.

Betty Boop. A full-length animated film featuring the saucer-eyed cartoon flapper who first appeared in “Dizzy Dishes” in 1930 and starred in 112 pictures from 1930 to 1939. Executive producers: Richard Zanuck, Lili Fini Zanuck and Richard Fleischer, whose father developed the original character. Currently in turnaround.

PARAMOUNT

Intersection. Inspired by the French film “Les Choses de la Vie” about an architect at an emotional crossroads. Directed by Mark Rydell, produced by Bud Yorkin and Rydell, and written by Marshall Brickman and David Rayfiel, the new version will star Richard Gere, Sharon Stone, Lolita Davidovich and Martin Landau.

The Saint. A Robert Evans project based on the tales of a detective first portrayed by George Sanders in “The Saint in London” (1938).

Lassie. Lorne Michaels, who has a production deal with the studio, is developing a movie about the beloved collie last seen on the big screen with James Stewart in 1978’s “The Magic of Lassie.”
