Altadena : Enforcing Fire Safety Rules

Share

In the wake of the destruction of 121 homes in the Altadena fire last month, the Town Council has approved a resolution calling for all residential development in or near the Angeles National Forest to comply with state forestry guidelines.

Tuesday’s vote came after Town Councilwoman Camilla Dudley, head of the land use committee, warned that the 272-house La Vina project proposed in the foothills above Altadena could fall victim to another fire.

Committee member--Camille Dudley is a member of the Altadena land use committee. Stories in the Nov. 21 and Dec. 5 editions of the San Gabriel Valley section inaccurately reported her title.

Dudley said the La Vina Project does not meet California Department of Forestry guidelines for residential development published in 1965 and revised in 1980. She said it had insufficient space between buildings, cul-de-sacs that are too long and streets that are too narrow.

“Our project is safe. We’ve gone far beyond the county requirements,” said Andrew Oliver, manager of the joint development by Southwest Diversified & Cantwell Anderson. He said it been checked by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and U.S. Forest Service and complies with all county codes.
