Farris Fuels St. Mary’s Past Loyola

Brent Farris scored 15 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead St. Mary’s to an 85-68 West Coast Conference victory over Loyola Marymount on Saturday night.

The victory means the Gaels will play second-place Pepperdine and Loyola will play first-place Gonzaga in the conference tournament March 5 at Santa Clara.

St. Mary’s improved to 13-13 and 5-9 while the Lions dropped to 6-20 and 4-10.

St. Mary’s guard Josh Unruh made a layup to cap an 11-2 run that gave the Gaels a 29-24 lead with 2:53 left in the first half.

After taking a 38-30 halftime lead, the Gaels blew the game open with a 22-7 run over the first 6:53 of the second half that included easy baskets off of four steals.

Unruh and Loyola guard Bill Mazurie later were ejected for fighting.

Wykins Jones led the Lions with 24 points.
