COMMUNITY COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL : Rancho Santiago Starts Playoffs With Victory

Sean Amos had 24 points and Matt Kordik had 20 as host Rancho Santiago beat Compton, 91-89, Saturday in the first round of the Southern California men’s basketball playoffs.

Nathan Small added 14 points, including a key basket in the final 30 seconds. Rancho Santiago (21-11) advanced to play Wednesday at top-seeded Ventura in the second round. Compton ends with an 18-15 record.

In other Southern California regional games:

Imperial Valley 55, Cypress 53--Paul Pappas, who scored 13 points for Cypress (15-19), had a three-point attempt fall short with three seconds remaining. The loss ends the career of Don Johnson, the most successful community college coach in state history, who was 588-259 in 27 years.

Moorpark 93, Orange Coast 90--Moorpark led, 82-73, with 4:50 remaining, but visiting Orange Coast went on 10-2 run to get to 84-83 with 2:04 to play. But Sean Martin scored the next five points in the final two minutes for Moorpark (24-8). Damion Morbley scored 28 for Orange Coast. Moorpark will play Southwestern. Orange Coast ends with a 13-17 record.
