HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Free Throws at 0:12 Sink Newbury Park

Gina Heads made a pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining Saturday to lift Newport Harbor to a 43-41 victory over Newbury Park in a Southern Section Division III-AA semifinal game at Camarillo High.

Heads, who had made two of seven foul shots before the fourth quarter, tied the game, 41-41, on a free throw 2:38 to play.

Newbury Park (23-5) led throughout the first half, and held a 30-23 advantage at the break. However, Newport Harbor (22-6) held the Panthers to 11 second-half points.

Alemany 67, Los Altos 32--The Indians (26-0) forced 27 turnovers en route to a Southern Section Division II-A playoff victory at St. Francis High.

Zevette Mitchell scored 16 points for Alemany, which advanced to Tuesday’s semifinal against Ventura.

“Tonight we played our best game since the earthquake, and if we play like this we should be able to win the CIF title,” Coach Melissa Hearilhy said.

Ventura 61, Hacienda Heights 52--Ventura used a 27-7 run in the second half to overcome a 10-point deficit and win a Division II-A playoff game at Ventura High. Freshman guard Kristin Franklin led the Cougars with 16 points.

Buena 61, San Clemente 34--Buena (23-2), the No. 1 seed in Division I-A, won the semifinal at Rio Mesa High in Oxnard and advanced to Saturday’s final against Santa Ana Mater Dei.

Buena’s Mikko Giordano led all scorers with 16 points.
