COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Cerritos Overpowers Canyons, 14-0
Javier Cortez had a triple, double and two singles, scored four runs and drove in three as Cerritos College (9-3) trounced Canyons, 14-0, Saturday in a nonconference baseball game at Norwalk.
“It’s a good thing we weren’t using wood bats today,” said Coach Len Mohney of Canyons (4-4). “There would have been a lot of firewood.”
Cal Lutheran 4-5, La Verne 0-3--The Kingsmen (10-1-1, 9-0) swept a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from La Verne. In the opener, Chris Fick (two for three) ripped a two-run home run, his fifth of the season.
Point Loma Nazarene 4, The Master’s 3--Jeff Tomlinson’s solo home run gave the Mustangs (4-6-2) a 3-2 lead in the eighth and Chris Beck struck out 15 in nine innings, but The Master’s lost in the 13th at Point Loma.
Mission 5-8, LA City 1-9--Raymond Rivera (5-0) pitched a seven-hitter for the Free Spirit (9-4, 4-1) in the first game at Sylmar.
Pierce 14, San Diego City 0--Brian Basowski and Cesar Martinez each had three hits for the Brahmas (4-5) at San Diego.
Imperial Valley 13, Ventura 1--Eric Rafter (2-1) of Ventura (6-3) gave up four home runs in six innings of a semifinal game at the San Bernardino tournament.
Harbor 16, Moorpark 9--Ryan Briggs and Sean Mitchell each hit home runs in a losing cause.
