Joe Carter tied a major league record with his 29th run batted in during April, helping Todd Stottlemyre and the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-6 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night at Kansas City.

Carter is the fourth player to drive in 29 runs in April, joining Ron Cey (1977), Dale Murphy (1985) and Dave Winfield (1988). Carter is on a 13-game hitting streak and has eight homers this month.

But even if he drives in another run this month, Carter might not own the record. Andres Galarraga of the Colorado Rockies has 28 RBIs this month.

Devon White went four for four with a triple, was hit by a pitch and scored three times. He leads the league with 25 runs.

Stottlemyre (3-0), who began the season in the bullpen because of an injury to Duane Ward, won in his first start of the season. He gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings.

Carter had an RBI double in the Blue Jays’ four-run first inning.

Chicago 3, Milwaukee 0--Alex Fernandez pitched his second shutout of the season at Chicago.

Fernandez (2-3), who had lost his previous two starts, gave up six singles. He struck out two and walked two.

Cleveland 11, Minnesota 3--Rookie Manny Ramirez hit a three-run homer and Albert Belle doubled twice at Cleveland as the Indians ended a four-game home losing streak.

Candy Maldonado also homered for the Indians. Kenny Lofton tripled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored twice.

Mark Clark (2-0) gave up three runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings and Jose Mesa pitched 2 1/3 innings for his second save.

Baltimore 10, Oakland 4--Brady Anderson had two home runs and two doubles at Baltimore to help the Orioles send the Athletics to their eighth consecutive loss.

Anderson, who never before had four extra-base hits in a game, tied a club record by scoring four runs. Rafael Palmeiro and Chris Hoiles also homered in the Orioles’ seventh victory in 10 games.

Arthur Rhodes (1-3) pitched a three-hitter for the Orioles’ first complete game of the season. He walked four, struck out eight and retired the final 16 batters.

Texas 6, Detroit 1--High winds blew winning pitcher Rick Helling (2-0) off the mound, forced fans to be moved from the upper deck and caused a 45-minute delay at Arlington, Tex.

Wind gusts estimated at 45-50 m.p.h. uprooted several trees in the parking lot and blew down a street light. A popup by Jose Canseco fell near the feet of Tiger first baseman Cecil Fielder for a single, and the field was left littered.

Earlier in the day, a tornado hit the north Texas town of Gainesville. On Monday, a tornado touched down in Lancaster, south of Dallas, killing four.

Play was stopped in the bottom of the sixth when the winds caused dirt and debris to blow up in the faces of the players and spectators. Light rain also was falling when crew chief Rich Garcia halted the game with the Rangers ahead, 3-1.

Seattle 4, Boston 3--Pitcher Greg Harris threw past home plate on Torey Lovullo’s grounder with the bases loaded in the 10th inning at Seattle.

The Mariners loaded the bases with one out as Rich Amaral led off with a double for his third hit and Ken Griffey Jr. was intentionally walked. After Jay Buhner sacrificed, Reggie Jefferson was intentionally walked.

Lovullo grounded back to the mound, but Harris (1-2) threw the ball past catcher Dave Valle.
