Marion Merrell Dow Inc. said its first-quarter profit rose 16%, led by increased sales of its Cardizem heart drugs.

The Kansas City, Mo., company earned $85 million, or 31 cents per share, in the three months ended March 31, compared to $73 million, or 26 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier. Sales rose 15% to $708 million from $617 million.

Sales of Cardizem drugs rose 16% to $241 million; sales of Seldane allergy medications increased 7% to $154 million; sales of the Carafate ulcer drug fell 6% to $33 million, and sales of Nicoderm patches fell 50% to $18 million.
