Steven N. Murray, a professor of biological science at Cal State Fullerton, was appointed interim director of athletics for the school effective June 1, it was announced Thursday.

Murray will serve during the summer while a permanent replacement is sought for the position left vacant when Bill Shumard resigned May 31. University President Milton A. Gordon expects selections for a search committee to be final soon.

Murray is chair of the academic senate budget advisory committee, a member of the university planning committee and athletics gender equality committee. He is the former chair of the university athletic advisory board and has served as an NCAA faculty representative.

Although the majority of his background is academic, Murray is familiar with the Titans’ athletic department. He said he is not interested in being a candidate for the open position, but believes he can have a positive impact on the department that has suffered through turbulent times recently.

“I think I can do some good things in the short period of time that I will be over there,” Murray said. “There is an awful lot of water under the bridge, and we as administrators and coaches need to set our sights high to make our programs better for the student athletes.”

He replaces Pat Quinn, who resigned after the season.
