Dave Stockton might have a little trouble concentrating on holding his five-stroke lead in today’s final round of the Senior Players Championship at the TPC of Michigan.

His mind is likely to be hundreds miles away where his son, Dave Stockton Jr., a rookie on the PGA Tour, shares the third round lead of the Greater Hartford Open with David Frost.

The Stocktons could become the only father-son duo to win PGA tournaments in the same week and also the first to win the same tournament. The senior Stockton won the Greater Hartford Open in 1974.

The senior Stockton shot a one-under 71 on a rainy Saturday to open his lead over Jim Albus.

Young Stockton shot a three-under 67 at River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., to match Frost, who shot a 67, at 11-under 199 for 54 holes.

“I talked to Junior this morning,” Stockton said. “I didn’t tell him much. I just reminded him to go slow and allow some extra time at the course. He said he was going out early, exercise in the health van, and watch films for a couple of hours. His routine is a lot different than mine was.”

The image of his son popped up on a television monitor in the interview room.

“Timeout!” Stockton said.

A graphic told viewers the younger Stockton ranked 165th on the tour in putting.

“One hundred and sixty-fifth in putting,” Stockton said, shaking his head. “That’s not the old man.”

As he watched the monitor, his son missed a moderately long putt.

“Tonight, on the telephone, he’ll tell me about that putt, and tell me he just got robbed,” Stockton said.

“David’s got a good golf game. He just doesn’t know it.”
