BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ELSEWHERE : Phillies’ Hollins Breaks Left Hand

The Philadelphia Phillies have lost third baseman Dave Hollins again, one day after he came off the disabled list.

Hollins suffered a broken bone in his left hand Saturday night after swinging at a foul ball in the sixth inning of the Phillie-Padre game. Hollins, who is expected to be sidelined for six weeks, suffered a broken right hand last season.

The Lake Elsinore Storm, a Class A affiliate of the Angels, has challenged Southern California baseball fans to try to outdraw the San Diego Padres tonight.

The Storm will play the Stockton Ports at the 7,566-seat Lake Elsinore Diamond, about 60 miles north of San Diego. The Padres will play the Colorado Rockies at Jack Murphy Stadium, where capacity was lowered to 46,510 by covering the upper deck seats with tarps.

The Padres’ smallest home crowd of the season was 7,094 against Pittsburgh on May 31. The Storm has played before two crowds larger than that this season, including a California League-record 7,608 on July 2.

“Storm baseball at the Lake Elsinore Diamond is big-league in every respect already . . . but there’s something special about outdrawing a major league team on the same night,” General Manager Kevin Haughian said.
