A Santa Paula man who was ejected and crushed by a car being driven by his cousin was identified Monday as Abelardo Jimenez.

Senior deputy coroner Craig Stevens said Jimenez, 18, did not appear to have been wearing his seat belt when he was thrown from the car at 4:45 p.m. Sunday on California 126 west of Briggs Road and south of Santa Paula.

Jimenez suffered massive head injuries and died at the scene, Stevens said.

Officer Staci Morse of the California Highway Patrol said Manuel Jimenez Andrade, 19, of Santa Paula had been at the wheel when his car drifted out of the slow lane and overturned on the shoulder.

She said Jimenez was ejected and crushed before the car came to a stop in a concrete irrigation ditch.

Andrade, whom Stevens identified as the victim’s cousin, was taken to Santa Paula Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released, the CHP said.

Andrade was not cited at the time but an investigation is continuing, the CHP said.
