A summary of selected City Hall actions last week that affect the Westside.

CITY COUNCIL

* PROJECT FUNDING--Approved several agreements between the city and the county that earmarked funding of various park and recreation projects financed by 1992 Proposition A bond funds. Among the projects are refurbishing at the Griffith Observatory ($4.6 million), restoration of the Venice Beach pier ($3.2 million) and stadium improvements at the Rancho Cienega Recreation Center ($250,000).

* BIG SISTERS--Approved awarding $30,000 in Community Improvement Planning funds to Big Sisters of Los Angeles, a nonprofit organization that arranges one-on-one mentoring and counseling for girls and young women.

HOW THEY VOTED

* PROBLEM BUILDING--Accepted the property at 12545 Pacific Ave. into the city’s Rent Escrow Account Program because of electrical violations. The program is designed to encourage landlords to quickly repair and better maintain their buildings. Once a building is placed in the program, tenants deposit their rents into a city account; the city keeps $50 of every rent payment and the remaining money is turned over to the landlords after repairs are made. Passed 15-0. Voting yes: Marvin Braude, John Ferraro, Ruth Galanter, Jackie Goldberg, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Zev Yaroslavsky.
