SIMI VALLEY : Hearing for ACLU Suit Over Dress Code Delayed
A December hearing date for the American Civil Liberties Union’s federal lawsuit against Simi Valley school officials has been postponed until Jan. 9, lawyers representing the school district said.
Attorneys for both sides have suggested a Jan. 17 trial date, but U.S. District Court Judge Irving Hill has not set a date.
The ACLU filed a federal lawsuit against Simi Valley school officials in September, claiming a violation of a 14-year-old Valley View Junior High School student’s constitutional rights to express himself.
Ninth-grader John Spindler was sent home from school for wearing patriotic T-shirts that violated the school’s strict dress code. The policy bans shirts with writing or pictures as an effort to curb campus disputes and promote a disciplined school atmosphere.
