Malathion Spraying

Share

Hysteria appears to be the response to the Medfly spraying in the Camarillo area.

The Medfly is not indigenous to California. It entered our state either with travelers, by mail or was illegally transported. If it becomes established, it will devastate commercial agriculture. We will all pay much more for fresh fruits and vegetables, and it will infect home-grown produce. It attacks more than 250 kinds of produce.

There is no “beneficial insect” to control the Medfly. Consequently, establishment of the Medfly in California would force pesticide spraying, which would kill all insects and jeopardize organic farming.

The use of minute amounts (1.2 ounces per acre) of malathion in infested areas will prevent a much higher use if the Medfly is allowed to proliferate. This pesticide has been used safely for over 40 years to control mosquitoes.

California leads the nation in total farm production. We cannot afford to let the Medfly become established. Use common sense to prevent contact with pesticides, but don’t let hysteria and fear destroy California’s crops.
