UNIVERSAL CITY : Peace Treaty Signing to Be Re-Enacted
On Jan. 22, at 1:30 p.m., peace will break out.
On that date, local historical associations and city agencies will team up to commemorate a monumental peace treaty, the Campo de Cahuenga Treaty, which ended the Mexican-American War in California and paved the way for California and the Western states to join the Union.
The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Campo de Cahuenga Historical Memorial Assn., the city of Los Angeles and its Department of Recreation and Parks, and the San Fernando Valley Historical Society, among other groups.
It will be held at Campo de Cahuenga, 3919 Lankershim Blvd., across from Univeral Studios. Parking is accessible through the alley behind Lankershim Boulevard or at South Weddington Park.
The signing of the original peace treaty, which occured on Jan. 13, 1847, will be reenacted, and look-alikes will play the parts of the two principal parties to the treaty, Lt. Gen. John C. Fremont and Gen. Andres Pico.
