PREP ROUNDUP : Shwam Pitches In, Sparks Edison to Title

After pitching a semifinal game in which he struck out 14, Mike Shwam came back in the sixth inning of the championship game of the Coachella tournament to strikeout two batters in the sixth inning and ended up two for four with three RBIs to help Edison beat Saugus, 10-5, Wednesday.

Shwam, who went the distance against Beaumont in a morning semifinal game, was named MVP of the tournament. Edison beat Beaumont, 8-0.

In the Carlsbad Tournament

San Clemente 8, Carlsbad 3-- Mike Casteneda scored the game’s only home run for San Clemente in the sixth inning to finish third.

In nonleague boys’ swimming:

Servite 86, Mater Dei 84--Blaise Morita won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5 minutes 29.89 seconds to give Servite (8-1) enough of a lead that Friars were able to edge Mater Dei (1-6).

Morita also won the 200 freestyle (1:57.01) and teammate Brian Heiffron won the 100 freestyle (50.54) and 50 free (23.01).

Fred Evans won the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley for Mater Dei.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Mater Dei 106, Rosary 64--Freshman Jessamyn Miller not only set a county mark after swimming the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.88, but she also recorded her first senior national time in the event.

Miller already has the fastest county times in the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley, 2:10.06.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Orangewood Academy 3, St. Margaret’s 2--Orangewood came back after losing its first two games, 15-7, 15-4, to beat St. Margaret’s, 15-1, 15-6, 15-6. Jess Calantas had nine kills for Orangewood.
